Install rpmfusion Repository – Or – Getting mp3 to Work with Fedora

Rpmfusion gives you two repositories (repo) with packages that weren’t allowed to ship with fedora because of legal issues, namely the whole mpeg, mp3 audio and video codecs — and many many more.

The whole Rpmfusion-thing consist of two repos: the free & nonfree repo. Same as most users – I don’t care about this separation and always install both of them.

You can do the install using command-line or in your browser. The latter is described here.

Point your browser to this site: http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration. You click the link according to your linux – in my case it’s. RPM Fusion free for Fedora 18. Click OK to open the downloaded file (with “software install”) and in the next dialog yes to confirm your installation (you get asked for your root password).

Now, back on the rpmfusion-site click this link to install the non-free repository (according to your linux): RPM Fusion nonfree for Fedora 18 – and follow descriptions given above.

I’m not really sure if the next paragraph is needed by anybody, but maybe it’s helpful for some linux/fedora newbies: When you have installed these packages no application or codec or … gets installed. You only give your linux-system a hint where ‘interesting’ packages can be found. I.e. on a freschly installed Fedora-box your rhythmbox music player isn’t able to play mp3-files and after installing rpmfusion-repos it is still not able to do so. … but rhythmbox’ sneak dialog now will find a appropriate plugin/package for you.

That’s all folks(tm)
